Benefit of fasting and prayer

Fast to do good

The first Bible passage will be one of our anchor text for this series called fasting and prayer. Fasting and prayer are two different words which mean different things. Fasting is joint with prayer because for anyone to fast effectively he/she needs prayer.

Prayer aid fasting and makes it’s effective and efficient.

Let do some commentary on our biblical text.

14Bless those who do wrong things to you. Bless them. Do not curse them.
15Be happy with people who are happy. Cry with people who cry.
16Agree with one another. Do not be proud, but be friends with anybody. Do not think you are wiser than you are.
17When people do wrong things to you, do not do wrong things to them also. But try to do good things for all people.
Romans 12:14 – 17 BWE
Kindly note in this article, the words in green show emphasis on the text I will be explaining.

In Romans 12:14 has just two keyword
  • Bless those who harm you: I checked out some other versions and I found BBE very captivating “Give blessing and not curses to those who are cruel to you.”. The bible is telling you not to be negative above anything but that you should be positive about everything. When people harm you, offend you, do wrong things to you do not curse them.
  • Do not curse: The word of God is saying no matter the grievousness of the wrong being done to you do not curse. Then I wondered what does this curse and this blessing mean? Does curses in this context means foul languages like God punish you or languages of indignation like because you have done me wrong, you won’t live long, can this also means cursing a thief that broke into the church saying if this thief didn’t return what he stole [keyboard] after 3 days let him die or run mad.
Kindly stay with me a little as I speak God’s mind concerning what Romans 12:14 means.

What Do the Curse and Blessing Mean in Romans 12:14

In the later part of our text the writer of Romans called Apostle Paul discloses what he meant in Romans 12:14. Let see as we roll our bible to Romans 12:21
21Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
Romans 12:14 KJV
Do not let evil overcome your good intentions. Something happened last year at my home church. A thief broke into the church and get away with our keyboard. It was a big burden for the church at large. Then after that, a prayer was raised by a minister saying “If the thief didn’t return the instrument in 3 days, God kill him and let him not see daylight”.
I was among those that prayed with passion and brought out many killer prayer points.
Today something has changed in me during the course of writing this sermon. The Lord opened my eyes through this scripture in Romans 14:21 saying no matter the situation, do not be overcome with evil. Don’t get so worried that unless the thief, the witch in that village of your dies, you won’t sleep at night.
Stop going on fasting and prayer to kill a witch or wizard in your village, stop trying to get so anointed to break a curse in your generation. This is not the primary reason for fasting and prayer.
All that is needed to do to your enemy is feed them with food.
.
When someone offend you instead of negative pronunciation say this because you stole the keyboard in the church of God, I declare into your life you won’t die a sinner. I declare into your life the same legs and brain you use to confiscate God’s property that same hand will you use to spread the gospel.
If it an enemy you can see tell them of Gods love and make them feel loved and have a great kingdom experience.
20But, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him a drink. If you do this, you will make him feel guilty and ashamed.”
Romans 12:20 GodsWord
Feeding your enemies here doesn’t mean physical food like milk, bean cake, amala and likes. It also denotes a character which is goodness.
If you can feed your enemies with goodness they will become a friend to your God soon.
15Be happy with people who are happy. Cry with people who cry.
Romans 12:15BWE
This is a very simple picture Apostle Paul was trying to paint here in Romans 14:15. He explained it in one of the later verse as living in harmony and agreement with everyone.

18As much as it is possible, live in peace with everyone.
Romans 12:18BWE
Peace is very important, if you can live peacefully with everybody that someone among them will push you up above where you dreamt to be.
In this period try your best to live at peace with everyone. The best way to do it is letting go of the past, erasing it, finding solutions to the present and embracing the future.
16Agree with one another. Do not be proud, but be friends with anybody. Do not think you are wiser than you are.
Romans 12:16BWE
In Romans 14:16 Apostle Paul was now telling us that ability to roll freely with all men, be at peace with all is not that you are wiser, higher and better than them. He said it is just a privilege.
3But I say to every one of you, through the grace given to me, not to have an over-high opinion of himself, but to have wise thoughts, as God has given to every one a measure of faith.
Romans 12:3BBE

So don’t be prideful and forget God grace in your life.

17When people do wrong things to you, do not do wrong things to them also. But try to do good things for all people.
Romans 12:17 BWE
Lastly on the bible passage, Christians should not take note of evil doings. Taking note of evil will only give room to you repaying evil by evil. Always repay evil with good.

What is Fasting?

Fasting is abstaining from food according to Kdictionary.
When you abstain, it means you choose not to consume something.
So in essence, fasting is choosing not to consume [eat] food.
Note about fasting
  • Choose: In fasting you have a choice, you can decide to fast or not. Choice is the most powerful weapon God gave to humanity. When you hear fasting you need to make choices. That choice will determine whether to fast or not. Any fasting outside choice is a hunger strike.

What Then Is Prayer?

Prayer is a conscious act of talking to a supreme being. It is an act of a man and a God talking.
Prayer aid fasting and makes fasting very effective.

Purpose/Importance Of Fasting And Prayer

3They say, Why have we kept ourselves from food, and you do not see it? why have we kept ourselves from pleasure, and you take no note of it? If, in the days when you keep from food, you take the chance to do your business, and get in your debts;
Isaiah 58:3 BBE
There has been a complaint I have heard over the years, men cried and say “I fasted and prayed but God did not answer my prayer”.
God is now saying at this time that there are reasons that I didn’t answer your prayers. It has been noticed that in fasting men tends to get angry quicker.

4Don’t you see that when you fast, you quarrel and fight and beat your workers? The way you fast today keeps you from being heard in heaven.
Isaiah 58 GodsWord
This kind of occurrences in fasting hinders prayer from being answered
Thereasons God gave will form my own very drafted purpose of fasting. It is centred on the word of God and not gimmicks.
You should also note fasting shouldn’t get you humbled for a day but it should be for a lifetime. Fast that makes you humble for a day is not the fasting God wants.
5Is this the kind of fasting I have chosen? Should people humble themselves for onlya day?
Isaiah 58 GodsWord

The biblical reasonsand purpose of fasting include:
The biblical fasting and prayer guide set out by God are:
  • Setting the captive free: When you are fasting God wants you to set captives free. You can set a captive free from the yoke of sin by evangelising and preaching the gospel. You can set a captive free from sickness by laying your hands and healing them. You can set a captive hold by a curse by preaching and proclaiming freedom to him. God’s first plan is for you to set captives free.
6to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the crushed go free, and every yoke be broken?
Isaiah 58b GodsWord
  • Fight injustice and save those who are wrongly punished: God allows fasting so Christians can go out and free those that are wrongly charged. Stand for your fellow. Revisit cases which injustice was applied to. Saved children in the orphanage and assist them. It all about giving a home to the homeless, help to the helpless.
6Is not this the holy day for which I have given orders: to let loose those who have wrongly been made prisoners, …
Isaiah 58aGodsWord
  • Assisting the needy and oppressed: One paramount reason why God permitted fasting is that believers should give their food to those without something to eat. Call someone give just a cup of rice or more to him. Just a cup can fill the cup of the joy of that brother of yours.
God also called fasting in order for us to give cloth to those without one, home to those without one and again food to those without one.
7Is it not to give your bread to those in need, and to let the poor who have no resting-place come into your house? to put a robe on the unclothed one when you see him, and not to keep your eyes shut for fear of seeing his flesh?
Isaiah 58 GodsWord
