Spiritual Investment vs Earthly Investment

Definition of key terms

So what is the meaning of the word
  • Invest: Investing means to spend money, time, resources or energy into something, especially for some benefit or purpose. We invest in something only if we are assured of greater benefits later.
As Christians, we can either invest in the flesh or the spirit.

Earthly Investment

Investing in the flesh– Using money, time, energy or other resources to please the flesh. Seeking fun, recreation, seeking pleasure for the flesh
It is ok to invest in the flesh, for as long as we are not doing things that are sinful and contrary to God’s will. We can enjoy life by seeking fun and recreation in activities that are not sinful, e.g swimming, traveling for leisure and other activities. There’s absolutely no problem in engaging in activities that are not sinful.
But even so, the benefits of investing in the flesh are few, unreliable and not eternal.
Let us read the Bible from the book of John 6:63. I’ll quote from the BBE( BIBLE IN BASIC ENGLISH)
I’ll just quote the introductory part of that verse
The Spirit is the life giver, THE FLESH IS OF NO VALUE.
John 6:63 | BBE
Look at that verse.
The NKJV says, the flesh profits nothing

There are no eternal profits or benefits for sowing in the flesh

The flesh is of absolutely no value. The flesh only enables us to operate in the physical world.
The purpose of the flesh is to enable us to serve God in the physical world
Remember man is not flesh

Man is a spirit with a soul living inside a body

Even after the body dies and gets buried, the spirit lives on. Read Luke 16:19-31
The story of the rich man and Lazarus. Even after the rich man died and got buried, his spirit continued to live on in hell.
  • He could still see in hell ( Luke 19:23)
  • He could still feel pain (verse 23 and 24)
  • He could still remember (verse 28)
  • He could still hear (verse 25)
  • He could still talk(verse 24)
So after death, the only thing we lose is the ability to operate in the physical world
That’s why investing in the flesh is of absolutely no value, no eternal benefits brethren.

Spiritual Investment

But now let us look at spiritual investment.
Spiritual investment involves spending time, resources, energy, money or anything to matters that pertain to the kingdom of God
It includes, preaching the gospel, tithing, and offering, supporting the work of God financially, fasting and prayer, reading God’s word and many other more

Anything that we do to support God’s work here on earth, anything we do to draw us closer to God, e.g praying and fasting. These are all examples of spiritual investments

Let us read the book of 1 Timothy 4:7 to 10
Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Spend your time and energy in training yourself for spiritual fitness.
1Timothy 4.7 |  NLT
Look at the last part of the verse; spend your time and energy in training yourself for spiritual fitness
This is a form of spiritual investment

Let’s continue with the other verses

Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and the next.

1Tim.4.8 | NLT
Physical exercise has some value. As I began by telling you, sowing in the flesh has only a few and unreliable benefits
But spiritual exercise is much more important, the benefits are eternal!
Verse 9 says that
This is true and everyone should accept it
1Tim.4.9 | NLT
Let’s look at verse 10
I’ll quote it from the amplified version
With a view to this we toil and strive, [yes and] suffer reproach, because we have [fixed our] hope on the living God, Who is the Savior (Preserver, Maintainer, Deliverer) of all men, especially of those who believe (trust in, rely on, and adhere to Him).
1Tim.4.10 | AMP
Look at the introductory part.

With a view to this, we toil and strive

Because of the benefits that come with spiritual investment, we toil and strive.
The best investment we can make is spiritual investment. Spend all you can in the matters of God. Serve Him with your time, money, energy and all resources.

I wonder why a Christian would fail to give offering at the church and yet never fails to buy data bundles every day to stream videos on YouTube
These are the type of Christians that invest in the flesh

Remember;
Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and the next.
1Tim.4.8 | NLT
Let’s read Matthew 19:27-30
We’re almost done, so just be patient fellows, I’m about to finish
[27]Then Peter said to him, “We’ve given up everything to follow you. What will we get?”
[28]Jesus replied, “I assure you that when the world is made new and the Son of Man sits upon his glorious throne, you who have been my followers will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
[29]And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or property, for my sake, will receive a hundred times as much in return and will inherit eternal life.
[30]But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then.
Matthew 19:27-30 | NLT
Look at this brethren
Peter asked Jesus, ” We’ve given up everything to follow you, what will we get?
And what did Jesus answer? Let me quote verse 29 from the MSB version.
And not only you, but anyone who sacrifices home, family, fields–whatever-because of me will get it all back a hundred times over, not to mention the considerable bonus of eternal life.
Matt.19.29 | MSB
So anything we sacrifice for the LORD is actually an investment fellow.
Let’s see the investment of the apostles, these men left everything for the sake of Christ. Do you think it was in vain?
Luke 5
[11]And as soon as they landed, they left everything and followed Jesus.
They left everything and followed Him. Do you think it was in vain?
That’s why Peter is asking the LORD in Matthew 19:27 see, we have left everything and followed you. What then will we have?
Matthew 19
[28]Jesus replied, “I assure you that when the world is made new and the Son of Man sits upon his glorious throne, you who have been my followers will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Can you imagine that by leaving everything to follow Christ, He gave them a promise that when the world is made new, they will sit on 12 thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel?
A great honor.
And let us read the book of Revelation 21:14
Revelation 21
[14]The wall of the city had twelve foundation stones, and on them were written the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
Can you imagine that the NEW JERUSALEM that is yet to come will have the names of these apostles inscribed on its walls? It wasn’t in vain that these men sacrificed everything for the LORD. It wasn’t in vain that they died for Jesus!
Read also the following scriptures Galatians 6:7-10, Matthew 25;31-40, Colossians 3:23-25, and Ephesians 6:7-8

As I finish, remember that nothing good you do is in vain, be it helping a friend who is in need, be it supporting someone financially, or any other thing. Please let us invest in the spirit fellows.
