Does The Music We Listen To Affect Our Spirituality?

I remember about 10 years ago, I was so into secular music. I bought Albums and listened to all kinds of songs on my device. At a point, my nickname was ‘African rapper’ due to the influence of M.I and others. I so much loved Asa, Westlife, R.kelly, Chris Brown and every other artists back then. I was so vast in the entertainment industry, as a popular saying, “I think I deserved some accolades” back then. I loved music so much that I made a decision that I was going to be the next superstar. I began to compose songs. One of my written songs was a hit in my neighborhood then, younger folks used to hear me whenever I sing and it became their anthem. I can vividly remember there was one song I titled “BACK IN THE DAYS” Mehn!the vibe and the rhythm was so cool. I didn’t know something was wrong with me, I knew I was a sinner but I saw nothing wrong in secular music even though I was aware GOD isn’t pleased with such.

Should a Christian listen to secular music? is making secular music a sin? I wondered.

I continued rapping, singing and enjoying my flow. Surprisingly, I was known to be a saint in the Church, I do preach in Boy’s Brigade meetings, I will tell them the wrong things B.B members needed to amend, yet my own beam was right in my eyes.

One day, a young boy named Deji (a boy’s brigade member) saw and heard me listening to a song by Wande Coal, he asked, “Bro. Richard, why are you listening to hip-hop? Is it good for a Child of GOD? That word hit me and I said: “It’s not that hip-hop is good but I listen to it because I want to be a Music Producer, I want to be familiar with beats and sound”. The young boy kept quiet and I could read his facial expression, something like – I am disappointed. I felt so bad because I just portrayed myself as a bad spiritual leader. Well, after all, I was just a religious guy with a pious look but I had no relationship or intimacy with the Holy Spirit. Don’t mind me, I couldn’t hear GOD, I was lost in wrongs and I know it’s wrong but I just didn’t know how to help it.

I discover a scripture that made me change the music I listened to?

Lord: Delete the songs on your phone
Me: I can’t!
After a few days, my phone crashed: all my songs were gone. After a while, I read a scripture

He went on to say, “Pay attention to what you’re listening to! Knowledge will be measured out to you by the measure of attention you give. This is the way knowledge increases.

Mark 4:24 (God’s word version)

It was the word that taught me that what I listen to affects me some way and somehow.

Having been addicted to secular music and transformed by Christ; I want you to know something. I never knew it was secular music that made me think bad (wrong thoughts). I thought songs about sex, drugs, money, love (lust), party, girls, craze and so on wasn’t responsible for my lifestyle but it greatly influenced me and it’s the same for everyone. A lot of people say they listen to any good music, what exactly is good music? The last time I checked, GOD is good. All that is good and perfect comes from him. How can a song that encourages pre-marital sex, thuggery, immorality and the likes be good music? Good music is any musical piece that talks about GOD and his nature. Good music is that which edifies and not corrupt the soul. The song you listen to affect your spirituality. How? I thank GOD I’ve been there, you can’t discern GOD’S mind and relate well with him if you listen to Babylonian sounds (secular music). Some people pray in tongues and listen to secular music, I can boldly tell you they are obviously joking. Most of them don’t know GOD experientially and they are not intimate with the HOLY SPIRIT.

Good music is any musical piece that talks about GOD and his nature. Good music is that which edifies and not corrupt the soul. The song you listen to affect your spirituality.

I have been through this struggle until I stopped listening to secular music, that was when I started enjoying sweet fellowship with the HOLY SPIRIT. In an attempt for some Christians to justify why they listen to secular songs, some will say “we are under grace not under the law, some might say it’s a level of dealing so it’s not for all Christians”. It is a big LIE, the grace of GOD is not compatible with unrighteousness.

What Does The Bible Say About Music We Listen To?

Most secular musicians are agents and propagators of Satanic agenda. Most of them are even ignorant of this, some of them just think they are doing music to make a living but whereas, they are strong instrument the devil is using to influence generations and to lead many to hell. What they communicate is most times not of GOD, therefore, it’s of the devil. Nothing is neutral! Even if a popular secular artist sings a Christian song, moral song or a piece that talks about GOD, it is still not worth listening to by believers. You might ask, is the song not about GOD?It might be but the word of GOD says ‘that which is born of the Flesh is flesh’ (John 3 vs. 6). A particular singer might sing about GOD but in the spirit realm, he is a minister of death. Why?Although he might sing a song that is lyrically sound in the physical but in the spirit realm, he is activating demonic realities to the listeners. Such a person can’t minister a song with spiritual potency that carries the life of GOD. How many have listened to secular songs and the song caused them to earnestly intercede or spend more time with GOD?I don’t think so! Get this right, only a man filled with the Spirit can worship GOD with songs, just because someone else (unbeliever) sang the same song doesn’t mean believers should accept such. Why?It doesn’t carry the life of GOD and that person is not sealed with the HOLY GHOST. The person will only minister death because he is spiritually dead. Funnily enough, such songs might touch the emotions of men and it is often mistakenly regarded as anointed songs by some religious folks. Just because R.Kelly or Alexandra Burke sang it doesn’t mean the Church should accept it. Let’s open our inner eyes, 1 Corinthians 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. You are either ready to serve GOD or live on to please yourself (satisfy the flesh).
Whether one is a baby or matured Christian, God’s standard remains the same – Psalms 96:1 O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.
Psalms 96:2 Sing unto the LORD, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day. There is a template for believers, we are meant to sing in the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
Carefully read this – Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. This is what you should be doing day and night.
When you begin to sing the Lord’s song, you hear GOD more clearly, your mind and spirit become free and you will begin to enter places in the spirit. Psalms 100:4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.
GOD’s presence will be more real to you and you will begin to enjoy GOD in his fulness. Your mind will be free of junks and words (lyrics) that stirs ungodliness and immorality in you. There is no argument, no one can make spiritual progress (walk with GOD) when such a person is still holding on to pleasure and worldly things (sounds) ― including secular music. This is the time to sing, dance and shout in the HOLY GHOST. As for me, I choose to be singing and chanting in the Spirit. No to secular songs, I want to ask you a question, will you sing secular music in Heaven? If you are going to heaven, familiarize yourself with the song of that realm. Can you begin to sing a song unto the LORD right now?GOD loves to hear your voice.
